A native to Southern India and Indonesia, Turmeric’s admirers arrived from across the world to enjoy the peppery flavor in their food along with its power as a perfume and health agent. Like ginger, Turmeric can be grated from the rhizome or used in its trademark orange powdered form.

The fragrance industry loves the woody aroma of Turmeric Oil. Its utility reflects in its use in many unisex fragrances, including some Tom Ford scents and Bruno Fazzolari’s Feu Secret. However, there are many men’s colognes and women’s perfumes also making great use of Turmeric.

The health benefits of Turmeric are equally varied. Turmeric is essential for fighting colon cancer, and plenty of studies indicate its power in fighting neurological diseases. A diet with Turmeric reduces the activity of the microglia cells in the brain and spinal cord. Increased activity of these cell links to Parkinson’s Disease and Alzheimer’s Disease. Additionally, Turmeric increases the activity of neural stem cells. This is one possible way to eventually cure people who have paralysis arising from spinal cord injuries.

The spicy and bitter flavor of Turmeric is ideal for many Asian dishes, but cuisine around the world liberally incorporates Turmeric into recipes. Moroccan ras el hanout spice blends and Persian khoresh recipes use Turmeric. It is also found in Thai yellow curry. In the Western world, the powder form of Turmeric adds color to many dishes. It’s used in canned beverages, ice cream, and biscuits.
